My portfolios went down by 1-2% over the last few days despite the S&P 500 being at an all-time high. The dip was due to the weakening $USD. However, today (Thursday 18th Sept.) it seems to be gaining strength and both T212 portfolios have bounced back up again.
The Fx change however, did mean that I could buy more with my £GBP on Tuesday and Wednesday.
So in my T212 ISA account I have done some weeding of my portfolio this week and sold a few shares (or 70% of some) in order to get some cash. Then I bought some more of the US shares or US-rich ETFs that I hold and some new ones.
Remember, there are only three things that matter in investing:
- The price you buy at
- The length of time you hold them for
- The price you sell at
If the dollar exchange rate is weak, you can buy more shares with your money.
If the dollar is strong vs your local currency, you can sell for a better price.
If you cannot control when you may need to sell, then consider buying currency hedged ETFs.
After January 2026 however, the $USD vs £GBP is expected to gradually strengthen for at least 4 years (2030+).
The rate may reach 1.33 US Dollars to the pound by 2030.
I hold hedged ETFs within tax free accounts (ISAs and SIPP) and I will be selling them and buying unhedged versions around the end of this year. For example, I will sell my EQGB and buy EQQQ.
